Damian M. New, a 17-year-old South Boston youth who has been certified by Halifax County Circuit Court as an adult, was indicted Thursday on one felony count of attempted murder and additional felony counts of malicious wounding, use of a firearm to commit malicious wounding and conspiracy to commit murder.

An indictment is issued by a grand jury against an individual who is charged with a crime. Before the individual may be convicted, the charge must be proved at trial beyond a reasonable doubt. The purpose of an indictment is to inform an accused individual of the charge against him or her so that the person will be able to prepare a defense.

The indictments stem from alleged offenses that occurred Aug. 25, according to court records.

An 18-year-old South Boston man was charged, and petitions for a 17-year-old juvenile were issued in connection with the Sunday, Aug. 25, shooting on Easley Street in South Boston.

According to South Boston Patrol Lt. Randy Redd, Detective T. Bratton obtained warrants for Jamell Allen Johnson of Vaughan Street for attempted second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Petitions were issued for New for the same charges.

At around 7:49 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 25, officers found a 41-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her leg in the 600 block of Easley Street who was airlifted to Duke Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, for treatment of her injuries, Redd said.

While on scene, officers obtained a description of the suspect vehicle involved in the shooting, and shortly after the shooting, officers located a vehicle matching the description in the 1800 block of Vaughan Street in South Boston.

According to Redd, a search warrant was obtained for the premises and vehicles located at the residence on Vaughan Street.

A subsequent search yielded several firearms and evidence from the residence and vehicles.

At 3:31 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29, an officer with the South Boston Police Department spotted Johnson in the Vaughan Street area of South Boston, Redd said.

The patrol lieutenant said Johnson fled on foot, and a K-9 from Halifax County Sheriff’s Office was called in to assist with the search for Johnson.

HCSO K-9 Gus and his handler, Deputy F. Cross, found both suspects in the woods off Ash Avenue after an approximate 20-minute search.

Both suspects were taken into custody without incident, Redd said.

Johnson was transported to the Halifax County Adult Detention Center, and the juvenile was transported to W. W. Moore Detention Center in Danville.

South Boston officers were assisted by the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and members of the Halifax South Boston Regional Narcotics and Gang Enforcement Task Force.
