A 22-year-old Chase City man was found dead Thursday morning in a car on Gygax Avenue in South Boston after police received a report of a shooting.
Authorities are investigating the death of Raquan M. Canada as a homicide.
Officers with the South Boston Police Department found Canada in the passenger seat of a vehicle described as a four-door 2019 Ford. He was suffering from what police said was possible gunshot wounds, a news release from South Boston Police Chief Bryan Young sent late Thursday night said.
The Halifax County 911 center received a report of a shooting on Gygax Avenue at about 5:20 a.m., and police officers responded to the scene eight minutes later.
The area surrounding Gygax Avenue and Hoover Street was blocked off for several hours Thursday morning while officers from the South Boston Police Department and Halifax County Sheriff’s Office spoke with neighbors and collected evidence from the scene.
Canada’s body was taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy was scheduled to be performed.
“It is at times like these that we ask our community to please come forward and help us bring much needed closure to the victim’s family,” Young said. “It is only with the support of our town and its residents that we can find those who are responsible for the unfortunate death of this young man.”
Currently, no charges have been filed, and no arrests have been made in this case.
Lt. Tiffaney Bratton is leading the investigation for the South Boston Police Department.
When contacted Friday afternoon, Bratton said she had no updates at that time.
