A 61-year-old Vernon Hill man was arrested Monday in connection with a shooting that occurred on Pine Ridge Trail in the early morning hours of the same day.

According to Sheriff Fred S. Clark, William Bass Womack of Pine Ridge Trail faces charges of shooting into an occupied dwelling, possession of a firearm after being convicted of a felony, breaking and entering with felony intent, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, reckless handling of a firearm and trespassing.

Deputy J. S. Garber served the warrants.

The sheriff said deputies responded to a residence on Pine Ridge Trail in reference to someone shooting into a house and found someone had shot through a window into the occupied dwelling.

Deputies spoke to several witnesses who stated an altercation had occurred with a suspect at the residence earlier.

According to witnesses, the suspect left and returned back a short time later and shot into the house and then broke into the residence through the front door and began searching for the occupants who were able to flee the residence through a back entrance.

Witnesses also told deputies the suspect then left and went to his residence a short distance away.

Deputies arrested Womack at his residence without incident, said Clark.

He was transported to Blue Ridge Regional Jail in Halifax and was held without bail.

No one was injured during the incident.
