The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office has been notified about scammers pretending to be a process server for the state of Virginia, according to Sheriff Fred S. Clark.

He said Cathy Cosby, Halifax County Circuit Court clerk, said the scammer tells the caller they have a summons to appear in local court.

The number is appearing on caller I.D. as the number for Halifax County Circuit Court (434) 476-6211.

“The person will leave a message and a number for you to return the call. The subject also states that failure to call the number back will forfeit your court proceedings,” said Clark.

Cosby said circuit court does not call individuals about summons and has not authorized any outside agency to do so.

Sheriff Clark reminded the public to use caution and not give any personal information over the phone.
