A 39-year-old Cluster Springs woman is facing charges after authorities report a 3-year-old ingested prescription medicine.
According to Halifax County Sheriff Fred S. Clark, personnel with the sheriff’s office, members of the Halifax/South Boston Regional Narcotic & Gang Task Force and emergency crews responded to a home on Cluster Springs Road.
Dispatch received a call that a 3-year-old had ingested prescription medication at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
“Upon investigation it was determined that the child had allegedly ingested prescription medication that was prescribed to the child’s mother,” Clark said in a news release. “The child did appear to be under the influence and was lethargic.”
The 3-year-old was taken to Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital by EMS crews for observation and treatment.
Authorities arrested Maria Lucado Womack on scene.
Womack was charged with felony child neglect and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, Clark said.
She was transported to Blue Ridge Regional Jail in Halifax and is being held with no bond.
Clark reported deputy H.O. Weddle as the arresting officer.
“The Department of Social Services was contacted and the investigation into this incident continues,” Clark said.
Womack’s first court appearance has not been set, according to online records.
