South Boston police are investigating what’s described as an accidental shooting of a 17-year-old Thursday afternoon, authorities report.
Officers responded at about 2:30 p.m. to a call that someone had been shot in the 1900 block of Farragut Avenue, according to a news release from Lt. Randy Redd.
Police found a 17-year-old male with an injury they said was “consistent with a small caliber gunshot wound.” He was taken to Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital where he was treated. The wound was not life-threatening, Redd reported.
“According to a statement given by the victim, this was an accidental shooting,” Redd wrote in the news release.
The accidental shooting occurred less than a mile down the road from a home invasion that occurred just hours later, at 8:12 p.m., in the 1500 block of Ridge St. At this point, Redd said police have nothing connecting the two incidents.
Both the accidental shooting and the home invasion are still under investigation.
