Authorities are investigating two suspicious deaths early Saturday morning on U.S. 58 near Turbeville, the Virginia State Police report.

It was shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday when state police were called to the scene of what appeared to be a single-car crash, Corinne Geller, public information manager for the Virginia State Police, wrote in an email to The Gazette-Virginian.

Authorities found a Nissan Maxima in the middle of U.S. 58, and two bodies — a man and woman — were laying on the ground in the median near the car, Geller reports.

"There was minimal damage to the vehicle," Geller wrote in an email.

The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Appomattox Field Office is conducting the suspicious death investigation.

The remains will be sent to the medical examiner's office in Roanoke for examination and an autopsy.

As of 1:30 p.m. Saturday, police were still working to identify the individuals and notify their next of kin, Geller reported.

"We’re still working to determine the circumstances of the deaths and what lead up to them," Geller wrote. "At this stage, we’re not releasing any details on the cause of death."
