A 34-year-old Halifax man is facing charges following a police pursuit Thursday in Halifax County.
Authorities received a report from someone at Punks Self Service on Thursday that a vehicle was just stolen, according to a news release from Halifax County Sheriff Fred S. Clark.
An investigator was in the area and saw a vehicle matching the description of what was stolen.
The news release did not detail the type of vehicle.
The suspect in the vehicle refused to stop and continued toward Chatham Road.
When making it to the intersection of Meadville and Chatham roads, the vehicle turned left.
“The vehicle was not attempted to flee at an excessive speed,” Clark wrote in the release.
Other officers with the sheriff’s office joined the pursuit and tried to get in front of the fleeing vehicle to make it stop.
That’s when the vehicle turned on Swain Road heading toward Mountain Road.
Authorities were able to deploy spike strips at that intersection.
The vehicle ran over the strips, causing all four tires to deflate, the news release reported.
With speed greatly reduced because of the tires, the vehicle continued to the 1200 block of High View Road where it tried to turn into a driveway.
The vehicle came to a stop partially in the road.
That’s when authorities arrested the driver, identified as Leeland Ambrose Watkins of Halifax.
The suspect is charged with attempting to elude police and grand larceny of a motor vehicle.
Watkins was taken to Blue Ridge Regional Jail in Halifax where he is being held with no bond.
