A 48-year-old North Carolina man, Imil Wheeler, died early Saturday morning after a stabbing at Willow Oaks Apartments in South Boston, the South Boston Police Department reported Saturday afternoon.

Police have charged a 58-year-old South Boston man, Lional Russell Barnett, with one count of second-degree murder in the incident as well as one count of attempted murder in the stabbing of 40-year-old Lavonnyea Ali of South Boston.

Ali was transported to Duke University Hospital for treatment of her injuries. Her condition was not disclosed.

Officers with the South Boston Police Department responded to the emergency room at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday in reference to a call concerning two stabbing victims, the news release states.

Upon arrival, they found Wheeler suffering from multiple stab wounds and Ali suffering from a stab wound to the arm. Wheeler was pronounced dead at 3:49 a.m.

Specifics regarding Wheeler’s death are to be determined by the medical examiner.

Further investigation of the stabbing revealed the incident had occurred at Willow Oaks Apartments in the parking lot near building 360.

“All of the people involved in this incident were known to each other,” Randy Redd, patrol lieutenant with the South Boston Police Department said.

The patrol lieutenant also explained that Barnett turned himself into law enforcement.

Barnett is being held in the Halifax County Adult Detention Center without bond. South Boston police officer Blake Jones made the arrest.

The news release did not provide any other details, including a possible motive in the stabbing.

Redd also said officers collected items of evidence, both at the scene of the incident as well as the emergency room which will be sent to the Virginia Department of Forensic Science for analysis.
