Members of the Halifax County High School robotics team, Cometbots 977, salute prior to a competition.

Halifax County High School’s robotics team, Cometbots 977, was in 12th place out of 37 teams after qualifying sessions on Sunday afternoon in a robotics competition held at Churchland High School in Portsmouth.

The competition started on Saturday and was expected to wrap up late Sunday evening.

Cometbots Mentor Jessica Martin said Sunday the robotics team compiled a 7-4-1 record in qualifying sessions.

The Cometbots must win two out of three matches in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinal round, according to Martin.

Alliance selections are next, and being picked as a captain improves the team’s chances of reaching the semifinals, Martin added.
