Girls at Sydnor Jennings Elementary School are engaging in an adventure in computer coding. The girls affirmed to their classroom teachers a desire to learn more about computers and coding. Linda Owen, principal, and Lisa McEntyre, club facilitator and LAN manager, noted the students’ desire and planned the beginnings of the club. The Girls Who Code Club is an international non-profit seeking to inspire, educate and equip girls with the computing skills to pursue 21st century opportunities. The club, which meets every Monday, is just beginning, but has all the ingredients to be a main-stay program at the school. Heidi Ward, fourth-grade teacher, said the club is off to a great start. Marcia Crowder, weekly club facilitator and ITRT, said she hopes in the coming weeks more girls will join in. The club promotes girls being brave, being creative and having a positive community impact through coding.
