School safety and construction of the new Halifax County High School are set to top Monday’s Halifax County School Board meeting.
The meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. in the public meeting room of the Mary Bethune Office Complex in Halifax.
Vincent Maresca with Skanska, the school board’s construction management agency, is slated to give a report on the high school project.
It was announced at the end of June that the purchase of the Powell land at the site of the new high school building was complete and they were set to begin civil engineering work on July 1.
Also at the end of June, they appointed interim director of secondary instruction Scott Worner as the project manager of the high school project.
The school board also has been reviewing different design schemes for the new school, and the public has been completing a survey that closed on Thursday.
In other reports, high school principal Michael Lewis is set to give a comprehensive school safety report. Also, he and ED-2 trustee Jay Camp are expected to give a security services bid update.
School officials began taking a closer look at security measures after a February lockdown at the high school resulting from an 18-year-old being found with a gun.
In April, the school division also accepted requests for proposals for security services at the request of the school board at its March meeting.
Dr. Worner told the board in May the school division had received seven proposals: Allegiance Security Services of Chester, B3 Security Group of Maxwelton, West Virginia, Butler Security, Inc. of Halethorpe, Maryland, Gardaworld of Richmond, ICW/WIS of South Boston, Proteced by Kingzmen, LLC of Danville, and Silber Security of Richmond.
In June, Lewis said security firms Butler Security, Inc., Gardaworld, ICW/WIS and Protected By Kingzmen, LLC would be interviewed.
Also Monday evening, the board is set to review the student code of conduct, and plan to select a delegate and alternate to attend the Virginia School Board Association Convention.
At the end of the meeting, the school board is slated to go into closed session to discuss personnel matters.
