A 79-year-old Nathalie woman, Joan F. Whitt, was struck by a vehicle in an early Wednesday morning crash and died at the scene, according to a report by Virginia State Police Trooper T. B. Jones.

An unknown vehicle was traveling in the northbound lane on Lower Liberty Road at roughly 6:45 a.m. when the vehicle came to a stop in its travel lane for a pedestrian’s dog in the roadway, as stated in Jones’ report.

Jones’ report continues saying 28-year-old Evan D. Slabach of Nathalie was traveling southbound in a 1996 Toyota Tacoma when he came around a curve and struck the pedestrian who was standing in the roadway.

The Toyota then ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a ditch, according to the trooper’s report.

Slabach was not injured, and no charges were filed.

Jones estimated $2,500 in damages to the Toyota.
