On Thursday, several calls came in to the Halifax E911 Center regarding the sighting of a black bear in the area of Hamilton Boulevard and College Street.
The bear was seen going through dumpsters and trash cans in search of food, according to Randy Redd, South Boston patrol lieutenant.
South Boston Police officers used distraction and loud noise devices to coax the bear back into the wooded area, he said.
According to information obtained from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, bears are primarily motivated by food.
Police are asking residents to keep their trash contained in proper storage containers and not leave trash outside for long periods of time.
Anyone who spots a bear should leave it alone, return inside and call their local law enforcement agency and the VGIF Wildlife Conflict Line at 1-855-571-9003.
