The Halifax County Chamber of Commerce is holding a series of candidate forums this week and next that will allow voters to hear directly from the candidates running for public office this November. A total of five forums will be held.

The candidate forum for ED-4 will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Halifax Town Hall. Invited candidates include Ronnie Duffey and Dennis Witt for board of supervisors and Jason “Jay” Camp for school board.

The second of the forums is for ED-1 and will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at North Halifax Volunteer Fire Department.

Invited candidates for board of supervisors include Calvin “Ricky” Short, and Patricia “Kathy” Fraley and Orey Hill are the two school board candidates.

On Thursday, the candidate forum for ED-5 will be held at Scottsburg Fire Department at 6 p.m. Invited candidates include Dean Throckmorton and James “Jimmy” Wade for board of supervisors and Freddie Edmunds for school board.

The candidate forum for ED-7 will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at Cluster Springs Fire Department. Invited candidates include Garland Ricketts for board of supervisors and Keith McDowell and Vince Newton for school board.

The last forum will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30, in The Prizery Theatre. Invited candidates include those running for sheriff, Fred Clark and John Tanner; commonwealth’s attorney, Tracy Martin; commissioner of revenue, Brenda Powell; treasurer, Ruth Anne Oakes; tiebreaker, Larry Roller; ED-8 board of supervisors, William Bryant Claiborne; and ED-8 school board trustee Walter Potts.

Every candidate running for elected office received a letter inviting them to attend their respective forum. These forums are free and open to the public.

Following each candidate forum, a presentation on the sales tax referendum will be made. The presentation is designed to help voters understand the issues and impacts on Halifax County. A town hall will be held to answer any questions citizens may have regarding the referendum.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5.
