The 240th anniversary Commemoration of the Crossing of the Dan was held virtually this year via Zoom on Saturday, Feb. 20 at The South Boston—Halifax County Museum of Fine Arts and History.
The Crossing of the Dan Committee recently recognized the sixth grade winners of the American History Essay Contest, which is sponsored every year to highlight the commemoration.
Katherine-Kaey Mann was the first place winner with River Doss and Emmerson Salley receiving second and third place honors, respectively. Honorable mention recognition was awarded to Damier Greene, Savannah Hetzell and Lin’Niyah Anderson Leggette.
According to Berryman Green Chapter Regent Anne Raab, “The Crossing of the Dan is a local event that shaped our history. The committee is proud to collaborate with Halifax County Middle School to promote the Crossing of the Dan and to recognize excellence in writing.”
Also, a special Certificate of Appreciation was awarded to soloist Aleigha Link, a member of the middle school chorus who sang the National Anthem during the virtual program.
