Girls on the Run-Halifax County finished its spring program with its celebratory, non-competitive 5K event Saturday at Sweet Briar College.
Together with their coaches, mentors and family members, the girls participated in the 5K together, the culminating experience of the program curriculum.
The spring participants included Emily Archer, Shanti Chisholm, Anna Dixon, Riley Francisco, Scarlett Hartsock, Olivia McKinney, Lacy Pate, Isabella Plapp, Ella Plitt, Bailey Wilkerson, Zia Williams and Scarlett Wooding.
Coaches and mentors were Samantha Van Opstal, Jenna Hall, Faith Roberts, Lydia Wenzel, Maryanne Austin, Rebekah Slabach and Kate Bishop.
Local sponsors for were Bright Meadows Farm, Business Women’s Association of Halifax County, Fry, Jordan and Wilson Insurance Company, Hudson Heritage Farms, Law Office of Lisa Francisco, Long & Foster – Scotty Felton and Southern Plenty.
Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based positive youth development program serving girls in grades three through eight.
Its mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.
During the eight-week program, girls participate in lessons that focus on confidence, healthy relationships and how to recognize individual strengths and celebrate others.
The final practice includes a pizza party celebration with their families. Each girl was recognized with a GOTR Character Award to celebrate her growth and character in the program:
