The Virginia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard fire a musket salute Friday night at the Halifax County War Memorial for the two Halifax County brothers, John and Henry Thompson, who died during the Revolutionary War.

The names of two Halifax County Revolutionary War casualties are unveiled Friday at the Halifax County War Memorial.

During the dedication ceremony at the Halifax County War Memorial in the town of Halifax on Friday afternoon, the recognition of two Revolutionary War casualty names were unveiled by historian Douglas Powell. Recognized for their service during the Revolutionary War were brothers, Cpl. Henry Thompson and Capt. John Thompson.

Powell provided a history of the two Revolutionary soldiers.

After the conclusion of the Banister Crossing events at the Halifax Courthouse on Friday night, men dressed in Revolutionary War attire representing the Virginia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution lead a group of some 100 attendees from the courthouse to the Halifax County War Memorial. At the memorial, the group saw the unveiling of two Halifax County Revolutionary War casualty names as well as hearing historian Douglas Powell present their involvement in the war.

On Friday afternoon, the grounds of the Halifax County War Memorial are filled with wreaths representing the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, the Virginia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and Chapters of the Sons of the American Revolution from Virginia and North Carolina.

These two wreaths represent the Virginia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and are part of the large group of wreaths at the Halifax County War Memorial on Friday.

Encampment

The “Banister Encampment” took place at King’s Bridge Landing in the town of Halifax on Friday afternoon with Gary Lee Hall portraying his fourth-generation grandfather, Avery Mustain. Mustain was a Virginia militiaman from Pittsylvania County who fought against Gov. John Dunmore, the last royal governor of Virginia. Listening to Hall giving the history of Gov. Nathanael Greene and the Southern Army proceeding northward from the Dan River to the Banister Crossing where his fourth generation grandfather participated are Rand Redd Pixa, president of the George Washington Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution from Alexandria; Giles Crews, veteran; Weldon Anderson, veteran; Boyd V. Archer Jr., member of the Dan River Chapter-Virginia Society; Levi Plain; Jessica Plain and Cody Plain. Hall is president of the Dan River Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.
