A 23-year-old Halifax man died from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle wreck early Saturday morning on MacDonald Road near Scottsburg, according to Virginia State Police.

Trooper D.T. Spencer reported that 23-year-old Al’Terique Jemal Gomes of Lower Liberty Road was driving a 2002 Chrysler Sebring in the westbound lane of MacDonald Road near its intersection with Scottsburg Road at approximately 9 a.m. when he ran off the right side of the road.

Gomes overcorrected and then ran off the left side of the road and hit several trees, Spencer reported.

Gomes, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was not wearing a seatbelt, and he was partially ejected from the vehicle, the state trooper reported.

Gomes was declared dead at the scene of the wreck, according to Spencer, who declared the Sebring a total loss.
