A 77-year-old Halifax woman was killed in a two-vehicle accident Friday evening on U.S. 501 in Campbell County.

At about 5:15 p.m., a Toyota Highlander was traveling along U.S. 501 and attempted to pass a vehicle in front of it. The Highlander crossed the center line and struck a Honda Odyssey traveling in the opposite direction head-on, according to a news release from the Virginia State Police.

Both sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Another passenger, Doris M. Chappell, 77, of Halifax, was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital, where she died later Friday evening.

The driver of the Highlander, 48-year-old Anthony T. Chambers, of Lynchburg, and his four passengers were transported to Lynchburg General Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries ranging from minor to serious, police said.

Chambers was arrested for DUI and charged with driving on a revoked license.

Additional charges are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
