A detour is in place on Va. 642 (Meadville Road) in Halifax County after a portion underneath the roadway collapsed in last week’s flooding.
Paula Jones, a spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Transportation, called it a good — and scary — example of why motorists shouldn’t move barricades even when a road appears clear and passable.
At first, VDOT suspected a pipe failure on the road. However, when the water receded, the ground under the road gave way. A detour is in place.
