A 39-year-old Brookneal man, Jesse S. Van Lenten, faces a charge of following too closely after striking a tractor tire in a Wednesday morning wreck, according to a report filed by Virginia State Trooper T.B. Jones. No one was injured in the wreck.
Van Lenten was driving a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer on L.P. Bailey Memorial Highway, one mile south of McKendree Church Road, when he attempted to pass a 2005 New Holland tractor driven by 63-year-old James E. Owen of Nathalie, and struck the left rear tire of the tractor, ran off the road to the left, struck mailboxes and a ditch.
Jones estimated $4,000 in damages to the Mercury. The tractor sustained no damages.
