A protest: “marching against racism and racism in leadership” is planned for Sunday at 6 p.m. in Halifax. The Halifax-South Boston Unity Project is planning the protest.
The protest will begin at the parking lot behind the Halifax County War Memorial on Mountain Road. Protestors will march on the sidewalk along Mountain Road to the Halifax Lofts.
“We want there to be consequences for leaders’ actions that can be perceived as racist,” said Nevaeh Hodges, one of the protest’s organizers.
The protest comes on the heels of the publication in Wednesday’s edition of The Gazette-Virginian of a letter to the editor entitled “Killing America” written by Halifax Town Councilman Jack Dunavant.
“A petition has been started, calling for him (Dunavant) to step down and it all ties into being racist in leadership,” Hodges said.
Cece Jones-Davis penned an email to Halifax Mayor Dexter Gilliam and the Halifax Town Council members Thursday afternoon.
“We need leadership here, and we need to know where you stand on issues of racial justice in Halifax, VA in the year 2020,” Jones-Davis says in the email. “Please remove Mr. Dunavant from Halifax Town Council immediately.”
