Halifax Dog Squad members and their canine companions took to the pool at Staunton River State Park on Saturday for a swim during the annual “Paws in the Pool” event.

Paws in the Pool is the annual fundraiser for the Halifax Dog Squad, with money raised going toward the groups’ efforts of vetting, spaying and neutering dogs.

The concession stand was open, lifeguards were on duty, but the event was closed to the general public, and only ticket holders and their canine companions were permitted in the pool.

After four years, the Dog Squad has rescued almost 3,000 dogs and counting, and they operate solely from donations.

Sponsors for the annual Paws in the Pool fundraiser included Italian Delight Family Restaurant, Love Shop Veterinary Clinic, Virginia State Parks and “Crossroads with the Burtons,” a new Sportsman Channel TV show featuring NASCAR driver Jeb Burton and family.

As a thank you to all those attending, the first 100 people received a free ice cream or snow cone compliments of the Halifax Dog Squad.
