The threat of severe storms Friday afternoon prompted Halifax County Public Schools to close at 1 p.m.

A severe weather outlook from the National Weather Service placed Southside Virginia in an enhanced risk zone, the middle of a five-tier system forecasters use to gauge the potential.

Officially, the Blacksburg weather office states there's a slight risk of severe thunderstorms Friday afternoon and evening. The primary threat will be damaging winds of up to 6 mph.

There is also a secondary threat of large hail up to a quarter of an inch in size.

In addition, an isolated tornado is possible.
