A missing 84-year-old Halifax County woman was found dead in a farm located across from her Nathalie home on Volens Road after searches Friday and Saturday, according to Sheriff Fred S. Clark.
The sheriff said Mary Ann Stanley was reported missing Friday at 7:20 p.m. after a family friend could not locate her.
He said they began their initial search Friday, and when they arrived on the scene, lights were on in her home and the front door was halfway open.
Police toned out Virginia Department of Emergency Management and search and rescue teams, local fire department personnel, volunteers and multiple law enforcement agencies searched the perimeter around the home using K-9 tracking dogs as they searched in the rain.
Their initial search concluded later Friday night and resumed Saturday with a volunteer locating her body around 2 p.m.
“There were no signs of foul play,” said Clark.
Stanley’s body was sent to the medical examiner’s office in Roanoke to determine the exact cause of death.
“Unfortunately it is not the outcome that we had hoped for,” the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office wrote on Facebook Saturday afternoon. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.”
The office extended thanks to all the law enforcement agencies, fire department personnel, search and rescue teams and all volunteers who assisted with the search.
