Runners begin the Family Nutrition Program 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, while walkers wait their turn. Over 70 runners and walkers participated in the 5K.

The weather cooperated with the Family Nutrition Program Fall 5K Fun, Run and Walk on Saturday at the Halifax Farmers Market, turning from hot and uncomfortable in the days prior to the event to cool and comfortable for over 70 runners and walkers.

Alyson Arrington of South Boston edged Alexa Harvey of Raleigh, North Carolina, for the 5K win, with both runners finishing in a time of 29:55, and Shelly Dix was third among female runners with a time of 33:13.

Seventeen-year-old Kyle Arendall of South Boston was the top youth male runner with a time of 31:30, with Ryland Clark of Nathalie finishing first among adult male runners with a time of 35:33, followed by Clinton McKinney with a time of 37:40.

Sam Lowery and Margaret Dixon were the top male and female walkers, respectively.

Austin Brooks, Family Nutrition Program assistant from Virginia Tech, gave diet and nutrition pointers to the participants prior to the event, and Morgan Farmer with the Family Nutrition Program led the participants in a pre-race warm-up.

Virginia Tech and Extension Family Nutrition Program staff was on site along with the Halifax County-South Boston YMCA and other community groups to offer information and resources for healthier lifestyles.

The Family Nutrition Program did its part in encouraging a healthy lifestyle on Saturday with a healthy beverage demonstration, including samples and recipes.
