Halifax Town Hall was closed on Monday due to the major winter storm, and because of the condition of secondary residential roads the sanitation department will have limited access to pickup solid waste for the next few days.

The town of Halifax will not be picking up recyclables on Friday due to the modified winter storm schedule, according to Town Manager Carl Espy who noted the change in schedule.

The regular town curbside-recycling pick up will resume Wednesday, Dec. 19, as customary.

During the modified schedule, town residents also may take their properly prepared recyclable materials to the large bins provided at the Blue Ridge Regional Jail lower parking lot which now accepts co-mingled newspaper, including mixed paper, plastic (#1 and #2), cardboard, cans including aluminum and metal and mixed consumer glass including clear, green and brown.

When recycling glass at the convenience center site, place the glass and other accepted recyclables directly into the bin with no bags. This will keep the materials free of contaminants so that sorting will not be necessary, Espy said.

TODAY: Residents normally served on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday where the sanitation department vehicle could not gain access will have solid waste picked up. Regular weekly curbside recycling will resume on Wednesday.
