As spring slides into summer, planners for the first-ever South Boston Fourth of July parade and fireworks are working to bring together all the essentials for a family-friendly July 4 celebration.

Much of the planning for food, fun and fireworks is complete, so organizers are putting a significant focus on the parade planning and promotion.

“We’ve already had some parade applications come in, but with a first-time event we understand that it’s important we really reach out to organizations about participating in this parade,” said Destination Downtown South Boston Executive Director Tamyra Vest. “We are excited to add this event to downtown, and we’re proud to honor everything that July 4 stands for in our country and community.”

The parade, which is set to begin at 6 p.m., will be the kick-off for the celebration. The parade is sponsored by Destination Downtown South Boston, in cooperation with Town of South Boston and Halifax County. The parade will finish at Constitution Square, where the fun will continue with food, music and kids’ activities.

The event will culminate with fireworks, set to begin at 9:30 p.m.

“Our parade theme is pretty self-explanatory,” Vest said. “We want our parade participants to do their best to celebrate America and the true meaning of July 4. We know there are lots of organizations and groups out there who could do some fantastic parade entries.”

Parade applications are available online at or applications may be picked up at the Destination Downtown South Boston office.
