South Boston Christmas Parade

Officials have canceled the annual South Boston Christmas Parade due to uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus pandemic. Instead of parading downtown, Santa will instead ride through neighborhoods.

Officials with Destination Downtown South Boston and the town of South Boston announced Friday that due to public health and safety concerns, the 2020 South Boston Christmas Parade has been canceled this year.

Tamyra Vest, executive director of Destination Downtown South Boston, said it is in the best interest of the citizens and community to cancel this year’s parade.

“Due to the size, scope and impact of the Christmas Parade along Main Street, accompanied by the ongoing uncertainty of the COVID-19 virus in the upcoming weeks and months, it is with deep disappointment that the 2020 Christmas Parade is cancelled.”

Even though the parade will not take place, DDSB announced Santa will travel through South Boston on the Santa Express Tour.

As part of the tour, Santa will ride through neighborhoods waving to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas. Elves will be with Santa to collect children’s letters for Christmas, Vest said.

A list of days, times and neighborhoods will be released at a later date.
