Mrs. Bernice Carter Murphy of Halifax Road, South Boston died June 18 at her residence at the age of 102.
Mrs. Murphy was born in Halifax County on May 6, 1918 to the late Samuel Carter and Hallie Pounds Carter. She was married to the late Robert Lee Murphy and was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, Alton.
Mrs. Murphy is survived by one daughter, Annie Murphy Burton of South Boston; one son, Robert Lee Murphy Jr. of Bronx, New York; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Leslie Murphy of Alton; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, John Henry Murphy; two grandsons, Andrew Murphy and Marvin Murphy; six brothers, Henry Carter, McKinley Carter, Isaac Carter, Herman Carter, Billy Carter and John Carter; and five sisters, Nettie Barksdale, Edna Brandon, Odella Bievens, Minnie Carter and Hallie Carter.
Funeral services for Mrs. Bernice Carter Murphy will be Monday, June 22 at 11:30 a.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home, South Boston with the family receiving friends at 11 a.m. until time of the service.
Rev. Harvey Bigelow will be the eulogist. Burial will follow in New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.
Public viewing was held Sunday from noon until 6 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home.
