Mrs. Bessie Bowman Coleman of Portland, Oregon, and formerly of Halifax County died Monday, July 1, 2019, in Oregon at the age of 105. 

Mrs. Coleman was born in Halifax County on March 18, 1914 to the late Mr. John Henry Bowman and Mrs. Nannie Dennis Bowman. She was married to the late Mr. N. Wyatt Coleman and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Halifax for many years before moving to Racine, Wisconsin, in 1981, where she was a member of St. Michael›s Episcopal Church.

Upon relocating to Portland, Oregon, in 2002, she joined St. Gabriel›s Episcopal Church.

Bessie was an elementary school teacher and principal for 35 years in Halifax County.

Mrs. Coleman is survived by three sons, Mr. Nathaniel Coleman of Portland, Oregon, Mr. Sinclair Bowman Coleman of Redondo Beach, California, and Mr. Wesley Coleman (Barbara) of Pasadena, California; one grandson, Mr. Wesley Coleman Jr., (Jennifer) of Redondo Beach, California; three great-grandchildren, Miss Mia Coleman, Master Zoe Coleman and Master Tyler Coleman; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 31, 2019, at 11 a.m. with services at Christ Episcopal Church, 545 N. Main Street, Halifax.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Christ Episcopal Church, P. O. Box 972, Halifax, VA 24558.

The family will receive friends at the service.
