Mrs. Bessie Mae Bailey McCargo of Alexandria and formerly of Halifax County died Friday, April 24 at Novant Health Prince William Hospital in Manasses at the age of 78. 

Mrs. McCargo was born in Halifax County on April 13, 1942 to the late Mr. Haywood Bailey and Mrs. Ada Poindexter Bailey. She was married to the late Mr. John H. McCargo and was a member of New Hope Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and was a retired inventory clerk at Fort Belvoir Army Base.

Mrs. McCargo is survived by one daughter,  Mrs. Terry Stamps (Donald) of Halifax; two sons, Mr. Roderick McCargo of Halifax and Mr. Zachary McCargo of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends including; devoted cousins and caretakers, Darren Spencer and Wesley Jefferson.

In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by one brother, Mr. Walter Lee Bailey; and a granddaughter–in-law, Mrs. Felicia McCargo.

Due to public health concerns funeral services will be private. The burial will be at Clays Mill Community Cemetery.

Public viewing for family and friends was held Tuesday from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home, South Boston.
