Charlie Eugene Crews Sr., 78, of Brookneal passed away Thursday, Nov. 4, 2021 at home.

He was the husband of Inez Hall St. John-Crews.

Mr. Crews was born in Halifax County on July 3, 1943, the son of the late Charlie Lee Crews and Irene Jennings Crews. He was a member of Childrey Baptist Church and owner and operator of Tri-County Insulation for 34 years. Gene supported and mentored Dixie Youth Baseball, was devoted to his family and loved each one of them unconditionally.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Chuck Crews; a daughter, Velvet McCall, both of Nathalie; two stepsons, Scott St. John (Charity) of Charlotte, North Carolina, Michael St. John (Mindy) of Butler, Tennessee; three grandchildren, Shaun McCall (Eden) of Danville, Jessica McCall (Dillon Harvey) of Nathalie, Trace Crews (Ashley) of Fairbanks, Alaska; four step grandchildren, Serenity St. John of Brookneal, Addison St. John of Charlotte, North Carolina, Ashleigh St. John Adams (Daniel) of Raleigh, North Carolina, Nikala St. John of Durham, North Carolina; great-granddaughter, Oakley Jean Harvey, his namesake; a sister, Becky Perkins of Nathalie; a beloved son-in-law, Long McCall; “grand puppy” Savannah Hawkins; his beloved dog, Maggie;and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rachel Adams Crews; and three brothers, Giles T. Crews, Richard L. Crews, and Joe W. Crews.

A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, 2021, at Childrey Baptist Church by the Rev. Jerry Stanfield, the Rev. Shelton Miles, and the Rev. Jack Stewart with interment following in the church cemetery.

The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the church and at the residence other times.
