Donald “Donnie” Ray Clay, 59, of Ringgold, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2021, at SOVAH Health-Danville.
Mr. Clay was born in Halifax County on July 16, 1961, a son of the late Dorothy Mae Clay Wall. He lived most of his life in the Halifax and Pittsylvania County areas. He worked for Danville Public Schools for over fifteen years until his retirement. He was a self-taught musician, singer and guitar player. He was the lead singer in the bands, “Detour” and “Southern Storm.” Some of his many other interests included fishing, camping, photography and antiques. He had a love for all animals, especially his beloved dog Jasper and his three cats.
He is survived by his significant other, Tina Alverson; her son, Thomas Alverson; a sister, Rhonda Duffie and husband Jay; a brother, Michael Wall; step-father Wayne Wall; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
A memorial gathering will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Pittsylvania Pet Center, 11880 US-29, Chatham, VA. 24531; Kentuck Volunteer Fire Department, 250 Ringgold Church Rd, Ringgold, VA. 24586; and Ringgold Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 10, Ringgold, VA. 24586.
