Mrs. Essie James Richardson of Ridge Street, South Boston died Saturday, Sept. 19, 2020, at her residence at the age of 73.
Mrs. Richardson was born in Kingstree, South Carolina on Feb. 8, 1947 to the late Mr. Hezekiah James and Mrs. Venus James Dorsey.
She was married to the late Mr. Matthew Richardson Jr. and was a member of Ebenezer C.M.E. Church.
Mrs. Richardson is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Melinda Ponton (Michael) of Newport News; one son, the Rev. Matthew Richardson III (Vashunda) of South Boston; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; three sisters, Rebecca J. Fulton and Annie J. Chandler, both of Kingstree, South Carolina and Jeannie Smith (William) of Warner Robins, Georgia; one brother, Leon James of Fresno, Texas; two sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Kelly Madison, Brown James, Sallie McCullough, Willie James, Conyers Weston, David James, Hezekiah James Jr. and Marie James.
Funeral service for Mrs. Richardson will be held Friday, Sept. 25, 2020, at 11 a.m. at The Crawford House Chapel with the Rev. Blanche Steward officiating. Burial will be at Faith United Methodist Church Cemetery in Kingstree, at a later date.
Due to COVID-19 guidelines, there may be limited seating. A facemask and social distancing will be required.
Public viewing was Thursday, Sept. 24, 2020, from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home.
