Mrs. Hazel Osborne Compton of Halifax passed away on Friday, Sept. 13, 2019, at Sentara Regional Hospital. She was born in Halifax County on Feb. 6, 1927 and was 92 years old. She was the daughter of the late Shellie Banks Osborne and the late Annie Steube Osborne and was married to the late Samuel Compton for 70 years.

She was a member of Dan River Baptist Church and was a 30-year employee of J. P. Stevens.

She also was an avid walker and bowler.

Survivors include one daughter, Gayle Compton Roark, and husband Claude of Halifax; one grandson, Command Sgt. Major Samuel Jason Roark, and wife Deanna of Fort Drum, New York; special nephew

Randal Craig Matze and wife Ann of Richmond; great-grandchildren

Kayla Fleming and husband Alex and Jeremy Roark; great-great-grandchild Joleen Fleming; special friends Brenda Hancock and Renee’ Puryear; and her fury friends, Sadie, Sam and Rusty.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, George Osborne and Ace Osborne, and four sisters, Elizabeth O. Johnson, Elsie O. Shelton, Shirley O. Epps and Klara O. Coulson.

A funeral service will be held at Dan River Baptist Church on Monday, Sept. 16, 2019, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Doug Gibson and the Rev. Barry Fero officiating.

Burial will follow at Halifax Memorial Gardens

The family received friends at Powell Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. and other times at the home of Gayle and Claude Roark, 1159 Golf Course Road, Halifax.
