Herbert Swanson Bowen of Virgilina passed away on Thursday, March 4, 2021, at the age of 98. He was the widow of the late Aurie Sizemore Bowen.

Mr. Bowen was a member of Aarons Creek Baptist Church, but also enjoyed the fellowship at Hitesburg Baptist and Mount Cana United Methodist churches.

He was preceded in death by his father, Luther Augusta Bowen; mother, Nola Bowen Willard; daughter, Betsy Kathleen Peter; sister, Joy Meyer; brothers, Jordan Bowen and Wayland Bowen; and son-in-law, Gerald M. Estes.

He is survived by daughter, Martha Brame and husband, Teddy, and son-in-law, Paul Peter and wife, Camile.

Also cherishing the memories of their Papa Herbert are grandsons, Michael Peter and, Jenny, daughters, Caitlyn and Emma; Brandon Peter and wife, Michelle, their son, Bowen; Adam Estes and wife, Donna Joy, their son, Mason and granddaughter, Abby Arrington and husband, William, their daughters, Aubrey, Avery and Ally, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

During World War II, Herbert served in the 325th Glider Infantry. Afterward, he farmed and also worked at Burlington Industries for 30 years. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing in the pond and creeks near his home, often with a grandchild in tow.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to the special employees at Boston Commons and Meadowview Terrace for the loving care given to their loved one. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Mr. Bowen may be made to the family for upkeep of the family cemetery.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 7, 2021, at the Sizemore/Bowen Family Cemetery with the Reverend Mike Riley officiating.
