Mrs. Irene Thompson Sawyer of Cowford Road, Halifax, died Tuesday, Aug. 27 at her residence at the age of 97.

Mrs. Sawyer was born in Halifax County on April 7, 1922 to the late Mr. William Thompson and Mrs. Rosa Tucker Thompson. She was married to the late Mr. Coleman Sawyer and was a member of Banister Hill Baptist Church.

Mrs. Irene Thompson Sawyer is survived by one granddaughter, Mrs. Chrissy Harry (Raymond); one grandson, Brent Washington (Amanda); three great grandsons, Sammie, Thomas and Danny; three nephews, Mr. Herman Richardson (Marie), Mr. Stanley Richardson and Mr. Randy Goode; a very special friend, Mrs. Lorraine Dance of Halifax; three special caregivers, Ms. Brenda Ballou, Ms. Pam Lacks and Ms. Marie Richardson; and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by one daughter, Margaret.

Funeral services for Mrs. Irene Thompson Sawyer will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 3 p.m. at Banister Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. William F. Carr as eulogist. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Public viewing for family and friends will be Tuesday, Sept. 3 from noon until 8 p.m. at The Crawford House Chapel, Halifax.
