Joan Louise Gregg Lent, 93, of Durham, North Carolina, and formerly of South Boston, died Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022, at Croasdaile Village in Durham. She was born in Stoneham, Massachusetts, on June 20, 1929.

She was the daughter of the late Earl Charles Gregg and the late Edith Holtsberg Gregg. She grew up in Lowell, Massachusetts, where she received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in textile chemistry from the Lowell Textile Institute (now the University of Massachusetts at Lowell).

After graduation, she married Roy Gordon Lent of Maynard, Massachusetts. As the family grew, she moved from Worcester, Massachusetts, to Raeford, North Carolina, where she earned a master’s degree in counseling from NC State University, and then to South Boston.

In Virginia, she became a social worker and became assistant director of the Halifax County Department of Social Services, from which she retired in 1994. She enjoyed making decorative gift bags to give to friends and family and for special occasions.

Joan was predeceased by her parents; her husband; and her brother, Earl Charles Gregg Jr.

She is survived by her four children, David Lent (Elizabeth Bezera), Joy Gupton (Mike), Gregg Lent (Mandy Costales), and Laura Essmaker (Erik); and by one grandson, Baden Essmaker; and two step grandchildren, Krista Essmaker and Niklaus Essmaker.
