Mr. John M. “ Poppo” Coleman Sr. died on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2021 at the age of 85.
Mr. Coleman was born Feb. 25, 1936 in South Boston to the late Willie Murphy Coleman and the late Marie Garrett Coleman and was married to the late Dorothy Ann Dixon-Coleman. He was a member of Spanish Grove Baptist Church.
Mr. Coleman is survived by two daughters, Alice Chavis (Roland) of Portsmouth, and Karen A. Clark (Alfonza) of Crystal Hill; one son, SFC (Retired) John M. Coleman Jr. (Lucy) of Killeen, Texas; one step-daughter, Angela B. Jeffress (Rufus) of Scottsburg; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; one brother, Sgt. Major (Retired) Thomas H. Morton (Willie Mae) of Stewarts Draft; half-brother Kenneth Traynham of Halifax; three sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one sister-in-law, Brenda Kind.
Graveside services for Mr. John M. Coleman Sr. were held on Thursday, Nov. 18, 2021, at 1 p.m. at Spanish Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Ronnie Womack, eulogist.
Public viewing for family and friends was held Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021, from noon until 6 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home. Following COVID-19 guidelines, a facemask and social distancing were required.
