Mrs. Josephine Hamlett Chappell of South Boston died on Saturday, March 9, 2019, at her residence at the age of 79.

Mrs. Chappell was born in Semora, North Carolina, on Feb. 5, 1940 to the late Mr. George Hamlett and Mrs. Carrie Jones Hamlett.

She was a member of Mizpah Presbyterian Church.  

Mrs. Chappell is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Barbara Barksdale (Earl) of Owings Mill, Maryland, Mrs. Doris Ferguson (Leo) of South Boston and Ms. Denise Chappell of South Boston; seven granddaughters; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Shirley Edmondson, (Elmer) of South Boston; four brothers, Mr. Leroy Hamlett (Naomi) of Dry Fork, Mr. Joseph Hamlett (Jackie) of Detroit, Michigan, Mr. William Hamlett and Mr. Harry Hamlett, both of Roxboro, North Carolina; two sisters-in-law; a devoted special friend, Mr. Willard Medley; 17 step-children; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Mr. Shon Chappell, and two brothers, Mr. Ralph Hamlett and Mr. Crawford Hamlett Sr.

Funeral services for Mrs. Josephine Hamlett Chappell will be Saturday, March 16, 2019, at 11 a.m. at Mizpah Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Barbara Carver as eulogist.

Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Public viewing for family and friends will be Friday, March 15, 2019, from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 350B Poplar Creek Street, South Boston.
