Mary Elizabeth “Liz” Terry Bates, 97, of Halifax passed away Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022, at Commonwealth Assisted Living.
She was the wife of the late Edward L. Bates Jr.
Liz was born in Halifax County on Nov. 4, 1924, the oldest daughter of the late Henry P. Terry and Fannie Snead Terry.
She was an active member of Beulah Baptist Church at Hat Creek, member and past president of Brookneal Woman’s Club and member and past president of the Bob White Club at Hat Creek. She was also an active volunteer working in nursing homes and many other areas of volunteer services. Liz was awarded the Citizen of the Year by the Lions Club twice.
Liz was a native of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and worked for the Department of Agriculture in the Food and Nutrition Program in Campbell County.
She is survived by a nephew, Mike Jones (Sandra) of Halifax; and nieces, Angie Jones, of South Boston, Kathy Terry, of Roxboro, Terry Lynn Hazelwood (Danny), of Halifax and Tanette Tucker Smith of South Boston.
She was preceded in death by four siblings, Henry P. Terry Jr., Myrna Terry Jones, Agnes Terry Tucker and Nathaniel Terry; two nephews, Calvin H. “Sput” Jones and Henry Paul Terry III.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022, at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow in Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Home or a charity of choice.
