Mrs. Mary Epps McDowell of Java passed away July 13, 2019 at Seasons at the Woodview.

Mary Epps McDowell was born in Halifax County on Dec. 18, 1924 and was 94 years of age. She was the daughter of the late Mose Anderson Epps and Mary Ann Thompson Epps and was married to the late Alvin Walker McDowell Jr.

She was a member of County Line Baptist Church and was grandmother to many in the neighborhood.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Lynn Griffin and husband, John Robert of Roxboro, North Carolina; one sister, Nannie Sue Beard of Halifax; four grandchildren, Eugene McDowell and wife Heather of Vernon Hill, Chase Griffin and wife Ally of South Boston, Stacie King and husband Justin of Rockville and Trevor Griffin and fiancé Nicole Roberts of Madison, Wisconsin; two great grandchildren, Holly McDowell and Maren King; one daughter-in-law, Sara McDowell of Vernon Hill; the family of Mike and Wanda McDowell and their children; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary Epps McDowell was preceded in death by one son, Alvin W. McDowell III; one grandson, Stephen McDowell; five sisters, Lucy E. Tuck, Annie E. Whitlow, Ruby E. Seamans, Pearl Crenshaw and Hazel Eades; and six brothers, Obie Epps, Otis Epps, Lacy Epps, Bernard Epps, Robert Epps, and Luther Epps.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at 11 a.m. at County Line Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike McDowell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and other times at the home of John Robert and Mary Lynn Griffin, 142 Baird Court, Roxboro, North Carolina.
