Melba Amerson Fender of South Boston went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2021, at the age of 76.

Born in Hahira, Georgia, on Dec. 14, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Isabelle Miley Amerson and R.J. Amerson.

Melba married her husband, David Varnedoe Fender Jr., in 1983. They lived in Valdosta, Georgia, and San Diego, California, before moving to South Boston in 2000. He preceded her in death.

Melba took great pride in her appearance as well as tending her garden and her home. She enjoyed growing flowers, baking and birds. She took pleasure in sharing that love with her daughter, ever pointing out various birds. She was a member at Dan River Baptist Church.

Melba is survived by her daughter, Audrey J. Shaw of South Boston, and sister, Patricia Bramlett of Albany, Georgia. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by siblings, Martha Plair and Jack Amerson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 25, in the chapel at Brooks Lyon Funeral Home with the Rev. Tony Brooks officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Following the service, interment will be in First Crossroads Baptist Church Cemetery.
