Pastor Sakina Renee Sweetney was born on April 19, 1962, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of the late Dr. Barbara Williams and George Lewis. 

Pastor Sakina accepted the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age. During a summer visit with her grandparents, she attended a revival service, responded to the call for the “right hand of fellowship” and was baptized at the Mountain Grove Missionary Baptist Church. In her adult years she became an ordained minister at the New Covenant Jubilee Church under the leadership of Pastor Horace and the late Dr. Barbara Williams. 

Pastor Sakina had a successful work career with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) in Washington, D.C. She later met and married the love of her life, Joseph Sweetney.   

Pastor Sakina leaves to cherish her loving memory her devoted husband, Joseph Sweetney; her father, George Lewis of Fremont, North Carolina; her one and only sister, Tammy (Lonnie) Burton; and her nephew, Lonnie Burton Jr. (aka Bud); a brother, Tarleeb Graham; her aunts, Lucinda Williams, Judy Howerton and Lenora Womack; her uncles, Earl, Larry, Ray and Dennis; and a host of other relatives and friends who loved her dearly. 

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Sept. 26, 2022, at Mountain Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 1079 Birch Elmo Road, South Boston, with viewing at noon and the service at 1 p.m. with Pastor Earl Howerton Jr. officiating (Little Zion Baptist Church, Oak Grove). 

Interment will be held at Mountain Grove Cemetery.
