Deacon Sterling L. Slayton, 79, of 5066 Buffalo Road, Long Island, departed this life on Sunday morning, Nov. 8, 2020, at his residence.
Born Aug. 25, 1941 in Halifax County, he was the son of the late Howard T. Slayton and Lona Pannell Slayton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Ezekiel, Willie, David, Louis and Calvin Slayton; and two sisters, Margaret Thornton and Ollie Gilbert.
Mr. Slayton was self-employed as a contractor and a veteran of the United States Army. He was a member of the First Buffalo Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, chairman of the trustee board, usher and vice superintendent of the Sunday school.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Mildred Slayton of the residence; one son, Otis Slayton (Lisa) of South Boston; two grandchildren, Otis Slayton Jr. and Olisia Slayton, both of South Boston; one sister, Elizamae Isaacs of Long Island; a devoted nephew, Paul Britton of Maryland; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Graveside rites for Deacon Slayton will be held on Friday, Nov. 13, 2020, at 11 a.m. at the First Buffalo Baptist Church Cemetery with Minister Steve Daniel, eulogist. A viewing will be held on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2020, at Miller Funeral Home from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.
