Sylvia Lacks peacefully passed on to eternal life with her Lord on May 23, 2020 with her daughter by her side.
She lived a very long and healthy life showing love, concern, and care for others her entire life. She loved the Lord and her family with all of her heart. She showered her loved ones with much compassion and encouragement until her last days.
Sylvia was born in East Bend, North Carolina in 1927 to Ernest and Nell Lumsden and was 93 years of age at her passing. Sylvia was preceded in death by her loving husband, Roy C. Lacks; her parents; her brother, Ernest Lumsden Jr.; her sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Earl Allen; and her brother-in-law, Woodrow Ammons.
Her sister, Mildred Ammons; and her sister-in-law, Jean Lumsden, survive. Sylvia is survived by her loving and devoted daughter, Sandra Snead Everett, and her husband, Lester Everett; her dearly loved grandchildren, Alan Harris and Mary Marshall Harris Heckstall; and her three precious great-grandchildren, Rawleigh Harris, Samuel Harris and Harris Gray Mattocks. She also is survived by three nephews and two nieces. Elizabeth Allen Smith, was a very special niece, near and dear to her throughout her life.
Sylvia also is survived by Roy’s three children, Pamela Lacks Shapiro, Jeff Lacks (Shyra) and Debra Lacks. Preceded in death by another of Roy’s daughters, Karen Ridge. She has five step-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren.
Sylvia had a career in banking, mostly with Savings and Loans in Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. She was also a member of The Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed everything that she did and made many friends along the way. Her infectious smile and loving manner made her so easy to love. She and Roy retired while living in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and later moved back to Halifax County where they spent many good years. There last move before Heaven was The Masonic Home of Virginia. It was a wonderful place where they still lived together independently. She is now absent from the body and present with the Lord forever. She was indeed a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother to each of us and will be sorely missed.
There will be a memorial service for both Sylvia and Roy in the Chapel at The Masonic Home of Virginia in Richmond. She was laid to rest in South Boston at Halifax Memorial Gardens at 11 a.m. on May 30, 2020, with family present.
