Evangelist Vealer Mae Jeffress Staten of South Boston died Monday, June 29, 2020, at Duke University Hospital at the age of 71.

Evangelist Staten was born in Halifax County on Jan. 4, 1949 to Mrs. Edith Flenoury Jeffress and the late Rev. Freddie Jeffress. She was married to Deacon Ralph Staten Sr. and was a member of Spanish Grove Baptist Church. 

Evangelist Staten is survived by her husband, Deacon Ralph Staten Sr. of the home; two sons, Mr. Ralph Staten Jr. (Karen) and Mr. Karl Staten, all of South Boston; one step-daughter, Ms. Yvette Armistead of Yonkers, New York; one goddaughter, Ms. Shavone “Nikki” Terry of Los Angeles, California; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; her mother, Mrs. Edith Jeffress of South Boston; one sister, Minister Jane Marable (Joseph); three brothers, Mr. Freddie S. Jeffress Jr. (Yolanda), the Rev. Gerald D. Jeffress (Cynthia) and Mr. Rufus K. Jeffress Sr. (Angela); five sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, including the devoted Rev. Diane Battle.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Gloria J. Stokes; and one brother, Master Joel M. Jeffress.

Graveside services for Evangelist Vealer Jeffress Staten were held Thursday, July 9, 2020, at 10 a.m. at Spanish Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Ronnie Womack as eulogist.

Public viewing for family and friends was held Wednesday, July 8, 2020, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home.
