I’m sure VDOT always has a lot on their plate especially around here with work on U.S. 501 north.
But, there are a couple of other spots I’d like to bring to their attention.
Has anyone noticed what’s going on with Bellevue Road coming off of James D. Hagood?
Maybe it’s just me since that’s the route I take every day.
I started to notice that my car wasn’t driving smooth through there, and then the next time I came through, I paid extra attention. You can see the road cracking. It’s definitely causing a bumpy ride.
Now let’s move on over to Bethel Road.
Anyone notice how bad the bridge is in the bottom on Bethel Road before getting to Temple Hill?
It’s so rough cars get over to the middle of the road to avoid hitting the roughest spots in the bridge.
I know one guy who popped a tire going over it.
Talk about a headache.
Speaking of road conditions, there is a VDOT survey seeking feedback on potential safety and operational Improvements along the U.S. 501 Corridor in Halifax County.
The link to the survey is https://tinyurl.com/yuyvan33.
According to VDOT’s website, “the study area includes major corridors that feed into US 501 in the Town of Halifax.
“The project is bound by Howard P Anderson Road to the northeast, Greens Folly Road to the south, and Sinai Road to the west. Together, the study area corridors are 8.3 miles in length.”
It addresses crosswalks in the town of Halifax, which I think are greatly needed. Yes, they have some near the businesses and the courthouse, but what about the farmers market and the post office?
The survey also offers proposed improvements to Mountain Road that would improve existing sidewalks, provide safe crossing locations and connect Ball Park Loop with the downtown area.
On Sinai Road, the survey talks about implementing sidewalks, which have been asked for for years.
Personally, I have traveled Sinai Road my entire life, and I’ve always thought sidewalks were a necessity.
For as long as I can remember, there have been men, women, women with strollers, children, etc. traveling along the side of Sinai Road.
It’s only right that they have a safe space to walk.
Another sidewalk along the north side of Greens Folly Road also is being proposed. This would help connect individuals from Sinai to the Centerville area.
A proposed roundabout for the Sinai Road and Mountain Road intersection also is included.
I’ve never understood why people get in such an uproar about a roundabout.
The first time I ever experienced driving through a roundabout was near the Arlington National Cemetery. I followed the traffic and existed with ease. It was easy, peasy.
Do I think roundabouts could cause wrecks when they’re first installed? Sure, but just because people aren’t used to them. But I think they’re easy to navigate and I think motorists could easily get used to them.
Another roundabout is supposed to be in the work for L.P. Bailey Memorial Highway (US 501) and Bethel Road.
Others have been proposed for U.S. 501 at Factory Street and Wall Street and another at US 501 (Wilborn St. / Broad St.) and Crescent Drive, both in South Boston.
I think with the right preparations and letting motorists know where these are coming and when could prevent future collisions.
